| Test results SEVERNE SAILS OVERDRIVE 8.5 :: A monster of power and stability. ![]() This latest sail from Severne, at the crossroads between race and freeride and with its 3 cambers, is the direct competitor of North Daytona and the Neilpryde V8. We tested the sail with the 100% carbon Severne mast that allowed it to reach full potential. Lighter than its rivals, there's a triple pulley system, a tall and thick mast protector and a well-reinforced head. On the water It has a semi-wide mast sleeve, and it is relatively easy to rig. You slide the mast in first, then you place the cams. A bonus: you don't need to use a downhaul winch. Nice and full on the bottom and with a nice opening along the leech, you feel straight away the sensation of power and suppleness. Heavier than the Loft or the Simmer, it gets planing early (9/10 knots for a good sailor) and it closes the gap on the board deck nicely. What we really appreciate is the delicious mix between suppleness and power, which allows you to handle gusts and chops easily and smoothly. It is so comfortable and so easy to rig compare to a race sail that we cannot help thinking that it is the sail suitable for 90% of lightwind sailors. It's true, we don't have the ultimate stability or the little turbo edge of a pure racing sail, but finally we lose very little in high wind to gain alot in light wind, medium wind and ease of use. In the maneuvers, the cambers pass perfectly, with more softness than in a race sail. Be careful: it still is a heavier and more technical sail than the average, designed for long reaches at full speed. Conclusion: A very serious competitor to the V8 and Daytona, the Overdrive is the definitive Severne sail for those looking for a cambered sail that is very fast but less complicated, more maneuverable and lighter than a pure racing sail. A sporting sail that also needs a bigger budget. |
